boost your metabolism and burn more calories
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could increase the amount of calories you burn in a day without increasing the amount of time you spend in the gym?
Good news…you CAN!
So many people are under the impression that in order to achieve a “toned” or “lean” look, they have to eat less and do more cardio. I’m here to try and shift that mindset by explaining how the key to burning more calories around the clock is actually more straightforward than you might think and involves eating more, not less!
The secret to burning more calories in a day? MUSCLE. Muscle is incredibly metabolically active, meaning it is constantly taking the calories you eat and turning them into fuel that your body needs to function. Your “basal" metabolic rate, also known as your resting metabolism, refers to the number of calories you burn while at rest, aka doing NOTHING.
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) accounts for the majority of your daily caloric burn. Therefore, the more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you’re going to burn throughout the day before you ever get up and exercise. Additionally, with added muscle and increased metabolic activity, your body is going to burn more calories, allowing you to eat MORE throughout the day!
In order to increase your BMR, you have to put on muscle. In order to put on muscle, you have to…
1) EAT — your body cannot efficiently build and rebuild lean muscle mass without being properly fueled. Prioritize consistently eating enough protein, carbs, and fats to ensure your body has what it needs to grow!
2) WEIGHT TRAIN — our bodies are adaptation machines. In order to stimulate muscle growth, you must put appropriate stress on your body through progressive overload + resistance training. Doing so will send a signal to your body that it needs to adapt and get stronger to be able to perform properly.
There are lots of weight loss companies that will try to sell you pills, teas, bars, and other scam products promising to help you boost your metabolism. However, you don’t need any of that and should stay far away from it! Instead, give your body the tools it needs and then trust it to adapt like it is programmed to do!
